EU, Russia deal to prevent energy crises welcomed by Barroso

Jose Manuel Barroso

Brussels (UNN)The Presideent of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed here Monday a Memorandum signed earlier today in Moscow between the European Union and Russia on an Early Warning Mechanism to prevent potential energy crises.
The enhanced Early Warning Mechanism is clear evidence of the goodwill on both sides to work together in a trustworthy and mutually beneficial manner, building ways to prevent and solve problems, even before they happen, he said in a statement. On his part, EU energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said, an energy crisis like the one the EU suffered in January is harmful for supply, transit and consuming countries alike. We need to do everything necessary to make sure that such a situation never happens again. In January, Russia briefly stopped gas supplies to Ukraine over a price dispute leading to a cut in gas supplies to a number of EU countries. A quarter of EU gas needs comes from Russia through Ukrainian territory./UNN
